Deep Water - Movie Review

Deep Water: Directed by Adrian Lyne

SYNOPSIS: Vic and Melinda Van Allen are a couple in the small town of Little Wesley. Their loveless marriage is held together only by a precarious arrangement whereby, in order to avoid the messiness of divorce, Melinda is allowed to take any number of lovers as long as she does not desert her family.

Deep Water is a mess. The script is incredibly poor and the chemistry between Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas is really stale. It is the most mis-advertised film of the year due to the fact that there is nothing erotic or thrilling about it. It is one of the most poorly paced and boring film that I have seen this year. In the end it has a massive identity crisis. Promises are made and none of them are kept. I wanted so much more than I was given. By the time we reach the climax at the end, you're so checked out that you don't care. There is no emotional attachment to our leads to care about what happens to them so we are left with more questions than answers. The performances on their own are not bad, I actually believe De Armas gives a pretty good one, but as a unit, they fail. Deep Water is a film that had so much potential but one that I left wanting so much more.
