Turning Red - Movie Review

Turning Red: Directed by Domee Shi

SYNOPSIS: Thirteen-year-old Mei is experiencing the awkwardness of being a teenager with a twist – when she gets too excited, she transforms into a giant red panda.

This film is an absolute delight that has some extremely stunning animation from Pixar. Turning Red is a very charming coming of age story that tackles the difficulties of growing up and becoming your grown up self. A film that anyone can relate to when it comes to the awkwardness of being a teenager. At the core of the story is a very emotional mother/daughter story that loses track at times but gets tied into a nice bow. The performances are nice, the score/soundtrack bumps and the nostalgia works very very well. I have some issues with the script and the way that certain characters are portrayed, but those issues are fixed and settles by the time we hit the climax in the third act. Turning Red is a film that will most definitely be controversial, but when you pull back the layers is a really nice film with messages that anyone can relate to in the end.
